The City of Providence has been well underway with various means to promote water conservation. Because of increasing demands for water combined with potential drought conditions, Providence Water has seen conditions where the available water supply has been reduced to extremely low levels. Providence Water encourages all of its customers to adhere to best management practices when it comes to water conservation. The objective of this effort in teaching conservation is to provide information and educational opportunities to watershed residents, in order to reduce non-point source pollution (which is caused by rain or snow melt combined with pollutants) loading to the Scituate Reservoir. The intent is achieved by these suggestions: make presentations in all elementary schools. Offer a national watershed protection curriculum to middle school teachers. Hold annual poster contests for grades 3 – 8 Offer workshops for homeowners. Provide new homeowners with a “welcome wagon” package of information Increase media coverage for pertinent events. Offer training to municipal officials in watershed protection. Publish and distribute a newsletter for business owners.
